How to take your online business to the next level

So, you’ve started an online company. You’ve gone through all the initial logistics - you have your website, you have your preliminary content, and you have a pretty good idea of what it will take to be successful. You’ve started to gather a following and attract some new customers as a result of your efforts.

A few months back, I also found myself in this place. I was excited about the success I had already seen, but I was ready to take my business to the next level and really start to explore what I could do with my ideas. After all, entrepreneurs are all about taking big risks to get big rewards. If you’re ready for this next step too, read on about my journey to the next level for my site, UberHealthBlog.

Let’s back up to a few years ago. In my profession as a medical doctor, I was becoming increasingly frustrated with the classic response to dieting and health - often, we were treating the symptoms with pills and participating in fad diets instead of treating the root of the problem.

So, when I began to get osteoarthritis in my knee, I responded by switching up my lifestyle for a more natural, healthful approach. Without even trying, I shed the pounds, and my knee was feeling increasingly better without having to turn to medicine.

I started telling friends, family, and patients about my journey, and they wanted to hear more and try out my approach for themselves. That’s when I realized that my approach to health and wellness could be helpful to others even outside my immediate circle.

I decided a blog was the best way to get the word out about this lifestyle change. When this received some traction, I decided to expand into video content. Even though I had no equipment and no experience, people were really enjoying my content and I was getting positive feedback.

Right around this time, I received an email that caught my eye. It was from an internet marketing company, and talked about how doctors only earned a certain amount of money a month, but how ordinary people without medical training could earn more via an online course. Obviously, this was personally relevant to me, and I reached out to the sender.

This leads me to my first tip for taking your online business to the next level - sync up with a partner who knows what they’re doing. I started working with InsiderInternetSuccess, and they taught me how to use powerpoint to put together a professional-looking presentation, as well as use photos from iStock to illustrate my ideas in a visual way. This made a huge difference in the quality of my content.

My next tip is to look at your business from a marketer’s lens. Marketers think about the motivators and barriers of a product or service, and then try to solve for ways to approach those motivators and barriers. I realized that people weren’t looking for health advice as much as weight loss advice, so that’s the label I decided to give my courses. I also decided to divide up my content into bite-sized chunks so it wouldn’t be as overwhelming to my audience. Both of these decisions contributed greatly to the substantial growth of my audience.

Finally, ask for feedback from your customers, and then act on that feedback. If you’re at a point where you’re ready to take your business to the next level, you must figure out what your audience wants, and then deliver on that. I decided to send out a SurveyMonkey survey to my customers asking them about their thoughts on my blog and classes. I have to admit that their response surprised me - they said they loved my content, but would like more prescriptive, specific content, like meal plans or recipes. Though my passion isn’t putting together recipes, I’m planning to integrate some of these things in my next blog posts and emails as a result of this feedback.

Taking your new online business to the next level can be scary. But when you take a risk and apply these best practices, you’ll be well on your way to more success in your company.
