Five things people never tell you about starting your own online business (...and it's not what you think!)

I've met a lot of people who are already doing very well in online business.

And I've met a lot more who would like to start their own profitable lifestyle online business.

One thing I've noticed is that there is a disconnect between the problems people think they will have in creating a profitable business, and the real problems that successful online business owners struggle with.

It doesn't matter what their industry or niche is, people running businesses have the same battles.

I thought it would be really good to write this piece, so that those of you out there who are considering setting up an online business can see that a lot of the concerns you are having right now are not the things you should be concerned about.

In fact, I'll do a deal with you. I'm going to tell you about the things you don't need to worry about.

Then I'm going to tell you the five things that successful online business owners do worry about.

If I keep my side of the deal, I'd like you to revisit your thoughts on setting up a lifestyle business using this new perspective. My hope is that by looking at the creation of an online business in a new light, you will seriously consider taking the action right now that you probably should have taken weeks, months or even years ago.

People Who Don't Own A Business Worry About Process

That statement is borne out by the results of the survey I carried out amongst my email list recently.

I won't go into too much detail about that survey, because I'm using it as the basis to create an absolutely astonishing business creation guide in the near future. Progress on that is well underway, and you really do need to keep an eye out for it.

But what I will say is that a lot of the responses around the fears of setting up an online business were about processes and systems technology.

In terms of systems, people are very concerned that they don't have the technical ability to set everything up themselves.

Now I completely agree that not many of us have the technical knowledge to implement a professional website, sales funnel, products, checkout process, support options and everything that ties into that on our own.

But my response to those concerns is simple. You don't need to know all that stuff.

What you need to do is have an overview of it. As a business owner, you have to have a clear vision from the top. A helicopter view. A wire diagram of how your business structure will look technically.

Then you get other people to build it for you.

Of course, that's exactly what my Automated Business System does. It takes your wire diagram, developed with me, and turns it into a reality using my experienced team.

Whether you go through me, or look at hiring freelancers who can do it for you, you don't need to know how to do everything yourself.

You just need to know what needs to be done.

The second concern around processes is always about marketing.

People are concerned that they will not be able to drive another potential clients to their website to turn their conversion rate into a profit.

Again, I completely understand the concern.

But the answer to that concern is exactly the same as it was for creating your online infrastructure.

You need a strategic overview. You need to understand the basic concepts. You need a marketing plan.

All of those things can be learnt online.

The actual implementation process can again be handled through experience people, rather than you having to do it all yourself. All you need to do is know that they are doing things right, through keeping a tight control on your traffic and conversion data.

There are five key things that existing online business owners worry about. It doesn't matter how successful they are, we all worry about them. Sometimes they cause great anxiety, other times we have them all under control and things move fast and positively.

So let me share them with you right here, so that you are in the know.

1. It Will Sometimes Be Harder Than You Thought

Now I know a lot of you think it's going to be tough. Well, the great news is sometimes it's going to be easier than you think.

But a lot of times, especially in the first year, things will also be harder than you think they are going to be. It's this survival of the fittest which means most of us are left to look at success through envious eyes. Most people will give up when things get tough, throw in the towel and walk away.

It's a natural filter.

It's great to have plans and goals. If you have any serious intention of starting a business, you will think you have everything figured out, a plan for everything, and contingency plans in place.

I always think this simple saying better reflects setting up an online business on your own:

"Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face."

Within the first year, you will feel like you've been punched in the face at some stage, if you are on your own.

The reason is simple. Planning gives clarity. Clarity gives a false sense of security.

Once you get up and running, that's when you have to think and move fast. Having the idea is only a small part of the process. Setting up your systems is only another part of it. The major part of setting up an online business, is doing it well most of the time.

The best people in business can spot opportunities and dangers. They can react quickly, having faith in their gut feelings and analysis.

Now I know that sounds terrifying. And that's why I offer one years mentoring as part of my Automated Business System. Two brains are better than one, a conversation is better than churning things over in your mind alone.

2. Allowing Self-Doubt To Creep In

When your business goes live you will feel on top of the world. You're about to make lots of money and maybe even think your going to live forever.

One of those things is definitely untrue.

The problem is that a lot of new business owners start with a huge amount of confidence, and then when there is a setback against their initial vision, self doubt starts to eat away at their confidence.

A few weeks in, without emotional backup, you can suddenly feel like you have a dozen hats piled on your head. Problems don't go away, and seem to multiply daily.

Suddenly you feel that you are perhaps not cut out for this type of challenge. You may even go a step further, by damagingly hiding your doubts from friends, family or associates.

Self-doubt becomes a real threat to your new business.

But it's completely normal to think this way. It's actually brilliant.

The reason is that self-doubt makes you question yourself. It makes you stop and take another look at the way things are being done. If you don't have self-doubt, you can blunder along the wrong path until it's too late.

Self-doubt can be wonderful, when you recognise its benefit.

3. Things Aren't Going As Well As You Thought

Have you ever spoken to someone who owns their own business, asking them how things are going for them?

I bet you have.

And I bet the universal answer you receive is that things are going okay, all right, great.

How often do you think that isn't the truth?

It's much easier to simply tell people things are going great, than to admit that they are sometimes not.

Your initial confidence and enthusiasm can quickly fizzle out if your projections are not reached.

Suddenly your goals for two years down the line seem a million miles away.

The truth is, you need to talk when things aren't going right. And you need to talk to someone with great business experience already, as well as with those close to you. It helps.

4. I Wish I Didn't Have To Take All The Responsibility

A lot of existing business owners wake up in the morning sometimes wish that they worked for someone else.

In fact, all of us do at some stage.

Now I know that might seem a pretty shocking thing to say when we are all striving to reach the goal of owning a lifestyle supporting business. But it's the truth.

But those of us who are successful only think it for a moment.

You quickly learn to re-frame negativity into positivity. You then find it's great to use that force to drive power through your day.

It's a skill you will learn, once you can get past the negativity of your initial thought for the day about becoming someone else's servant again, about running for the safety net of employment.

And lets face it, whatever the reason you are thinking about setting-up your own online business, you want to set yourself free – not look back with rose-tinted spectacles on.

5. I'm Completely Overwhelmed By All This

It doesn't matter what you do, you will feel overwhelmed at some stage.

No matter how much you prepare, plan or educate yourself, sometimes things can feel completely out of control. And the truth is that sometimes it can be overwhelming.

But if this was easy, everyone would be able to do it without any help.

The key is to learn to adapt fast and learn from your mistakes. It's the only way that you can succeed.

And you can succeed, if you tell yourself that even though things feel out of control now, a lot of what is going on is positive, and it will all come together in the long run.

Of course, being on your own in business can be lonely. That's why it's great to get a team of people around you who you can bounce ideas off, and get reassurances from.

Running An Online Business Is Really About You

I hope you can now see the truth of what an online business really contains in terms of dealing with challenges.

It's not about infrastructure and processes, it's about how you deal with each day, week and month.

Infrastructure and process can be managed by other people, as long as you have a general idea of the direction it should all be heading in.

But there will be no direction if you let the the power of your own mind be channeled negatively.

That's why I wanted to write this post.
